Improving Body Image Can Prevent Eating Disorders
Eating disorders present a special challenge for physicians and psychologists because they are complex disorders with a number of possible causes. One potential impetus for the development of eating disorders that many psychologists have identified has to do with body image. The better you feel about your body, psychologists tell us, the better your overall mental and physical health. A poor body image, on the other hand, can help create the circumstances that can lead to the development of an eating disorder. Here are four ideas to consider that can help change the way you think and feel about your body. Many psychologists believe that simply cultivating a positive body image can sometimes prevent the onset of some eating disorders.
1. Cultivate a sense of gratitude for all that your body does. One way to do this is by composing a list of all the things that you are grateful about your body. Write down all the things that your body lets you do, no matter how miniscule it seems. For example, put down how your body lets you walk the dog, play with the kids, garden, or dance. Read your list often, and add to it at all times. Also don't forget to consider the amazing nature of your body. For instance, did you know that your body is constantly renewing itself? Every five days, your stomach lining is renewed, your liver renews itself six weeks or so, and your skin cells are renewed on a monthly basis. Consider what a marvel your human body is and soon you will begin to gain greater respect for it.
2. Find an exercise routine that you truly enjoy. Make a commitment to exercise, but not solely as a means of losing weight. Many people who exercise to lose weight forget the joy of pure movement. Find an exercise routine, game, or sport that allows you to move your body with joy. Think beyond the gym or exercise videos, and find something new that you can enjoy and look forward to.
3. Make a list of all the people in your life that you admire, and why you look up to them. After you have finished your list, consider this: how many of the people on your list do you admire because of the way they look? Chances are, you'll find that most of the people on your list are there not because of their physical appearance, but because they have touched your life in a number of more profound ways.
4. Decide to be positive and confident, even if you have to fake it. Even if you feel down in the dumps about your body, this doesn't mean you can't cultivate a sense of internal confidence. Walk with your head held high, your back straight, and choose to feel confident. Even if you think you can't do it, studies have shown that simply faking a feeling can make it come to life. So, just pretending to feel confident can actually imbue you with a true sense of well being and confidence.
